What is airless spray painting?

So I’ve been using the term “airless spray painting” without really knowing what that meant. Today, I’m on a mission to learn about what that really means. Here we go:

An airless sprayer works by pumping paint at very high pressure, through a hose and out a tiny hole in the spray gun tip. The tip is designed to break up the paint evenly into a fan-shaped spray pattern of tiny droplets. Using different tips, you can spray thin liquids like stain, lacquer, and varnish or thicker liquids like latex house paint.

With a little practice, you can use an airless sprayer to apply a perfectly smooth finish on doors, cabinets and woodwork. And since an airless sprayer pumps paint directly from a can or 5-gallon bucket, you can apply a lot of material in a short time. This makes an airless sprayer particularly well suited for large paint jobs, like priming bare drywall in a new house or painting a 300-ft.-long privacy fence.

Pros

The best advantage in using an airless system is that it’s much faster than using the traditional brush or roller method, like Tom Sawyer. In many cases it will literally take half the time.

The other big plus is that because nothing is actually contacting the surface except the paint itself, the finish will be much smoother than the traditional method as well. There’s simply no better way to make your project look perfect!

Cons

There are some drawbacks: because the paint is airborne, it’s possible for some of it to miss the target and be wasted. It can even drift with the wind outside and land on things you definitely don’t want it too. Be especially careful on windy days!

Bottom line is, airless sprayers are excellent for medium- to large-scale projects, even around the house. With just a bit of practice, anyone can use them. It’s a great tool to have in your arsenal, and at KM Coating can help you every step of the way!

Do the other hoses have a point? Yes!

Yesterday I mentioned PTFE hose – which we said has some excellent qualities and was, in fact, the top-of-the-line. That’s great. I hope I sold you on the benefits of good ol’ polytetrafluoroethylene. But if it’s so wonderful, why do we have ‘other’ hoses in stock?

Well, sometimes, like Humphrey Bogart said: “a hotdog at the ballpark is better than a steak at the Ritz.” Sometimes, you don’t need all that fancy stuff and you just need a hose to get the job done.

Airless ⅛” Hose
This airless 1/8″ hose is if you need a smaller hose to act as a ‘whip’ so that the smaller, final section of the hose that is held up by the user weighs as little as possible to prevent fatigue.

Stainless Steel Braided Hose

A stainless steel hose has excellent flexibility and is designed for confined, potentially explosive atmospheres. Therefore, this is NOT where you want to get cute! Stainless steel braided hose ensures full surface conductivity and provides excellent resistance to paints, solvents, and chemicals.

Air Assisted Airless Welded Twin Hose

Equipped on an air-assisted airless paint sprayer, the KMW23 high-pressure hose series is a welded twin hose comprising a 3/16” airless paint sprayer hose and a 1/4″ pneumatic hose. Each hose is color-coded for easy identification and can be used with your Graco air-assisted airless spray gun and Wagner spray gun.

Teflon Core Hose

KM Coating offers a wide variety of specialty hoses designed for your airless paint sprayer or air-assisted airless paint sprayer. Our PTFE hose with a thermoplastic cover is available in 1/8” ID to 1/2″ ID and is rated up to 5,000 PSI. This Teflon core hose is able to be used in extremely high and low temperatures and chemically resistant of all common solvents including acids and bases.

What is PTFE?

Yesterday I laid my cards on the table: I don’t know much about the industry. But I’m planning on learning here. And yesterday I mentioned PTFE hose. I know we sell it. But I don’t know what it is.

Evidently it stands for Polytetrafluoroethylene (I can see why they call it PTFE), but it’s probably better known as Teflon. Now we’re getting somewhere! I know Teflon. Turns out it does more than improve the ratio of scrambled eggs on your plate vs. scrambled eggs still in the pan.

Such a shame when eggs go to waste. Thanks, PTFE!

History/Random Knowledge

PTFE was accidentally discovered in 1938 by Roy J. Plunkett while he was working in New Jersey for DuPont. (As a Jersey Boy, I am contractually obligated to share this detail.)

As Plunkett attempted to make a new refrigerant, the gas in its pressure bottle stopped flowing before the bottle’s weight had dropped to the point signaling “empty.” Since Plunkett was measuring the amount of gas used by weighing the bottle, he became curious as to the source of the weight, and finally resorted to sawing the bottle apart. He found the bottle’s interior coated with a waxy white material that was oddly slippery. Analysis showed that it was polymerized perfluoroethylene, with the iron from the inside of the container having acted as a catalyst at high pressure. Kinetic Chemicals patented the new fluorinated plastic (analogous to the already known polyethylene) in 1941, and registered the Teflon trademark in 1945.

What is it used for?

The major application of PTFE, consuming about 50% of production, is for the insulation of wiring in aerospace and computer applications (e.g. hookup wire, coaxial cables). This application exploits the fact that PTFE has excellent dielectric (insulation) properties.

In industrial applications, owing to its low friction, PTFE is used for plain bearings, gears, slide plates, seals, gaskets, bushing, and more applications with sliding action of parts, where it outperforms acetal and nylon.

Why we care about it, though, is because of its extreme non-reactivity and high temperature rating, PTFE is often used as the liner in hose assemblies, expansion joints, and in industrial pipe lines, particularly in applications using acids, alkalis, or other chemicals. Its frictionless qualities allow improved flow of highly viscous liquids – like paint!

It’s the top-of-the-line and the best choice if you need a job done right!

From our website:

The mid-range pressure stainless steel braided hose is available in two different cores, smooth bore and convoluted. Smoothbore stainless steel hose provides for easy assembly and fast flow. The convoluted PTFE hose inner tube provides added flexibility to the larger sized diameter pressure hoses to solve your fluid dynamics needs. This stainless steel flexible hose has the lowest coefficient of friction of any polymer and resists deterioration, which is why it is commonly used with harsh chemicals.  If a higher PSI pressure hose is required, try one of our thermoplastic covered PTFE hose.  This series of hose is available from 1/8″ ID to 1/2″ ID and rated up to 5,000 PSI.

Our PTFE tubing is a low-pressure solution for more than just your fluid handling needs. This tubing is a natural color and easy to clean due to a non-contamination property. If your temperature requirements range up to 500°F (260°C) then our PTFE hose is certainly the recommended choice. Paired with our fully stainless steel reusable fittings, it will solve all of your fluid mechanics requirements and much more.
